What is an order member?

An order member is someone who has been ordained into the Western Buddhist Order. Although order members try to lead a one hundred percent Buddhist life, they are not monks or nuns. What matters is not the lifestyle that Order members adopt, but the spiritual commitment they have made. At ordination, Order members are given a Buddhist name and a kesa (piece of white cloth with symbols of the three jewels) to wear around their necks on public or ceremonial occasions.
